Our Lord suffered through 6 hearings, trials and horrible abuse before He was crucified.
A. The three Jewish trials.
1. The preliminary hearing before Annas, the corrupt head of the priestly dynasty.
2. The trial before Caiaphas, the present High Priest in Jerusalem.
3. The “official” trial before the Sanhedrin, Israel’s ruling body.
B. The three Roman trials.
4. The first trial before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Prefect of Judaea, Samaria and Idumea (Southern Israel) from 26 to 36 AD, who alone had the power of capital punishment.
5. Change of venue. Taken to Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Perea (Northern Israel and the Trans-Jordan).
6. Returned to Pilate who, because of the political situation in Rome, was forced to condemn a Man he declared innocent numerous times.
The cumulative effects of Jesus’ abuse.
1. Isaiah 50:5-7 – His beard.
2. Isaiah 52:13-15 – physical description.
3. He suffered in silence until our sins were placed upon Him on the cross (Psalm 22:1)
The purpose of Christ’s suffering & death.
1. Isaiah 53:10-11 – propitiation.
2. 2 Corinthians 5:21 – substitution.
3. John 3:16 – It fulfilled the love of God.
