MISERABLE COUNSELORS GIVING UNBIBLICAL COUNSEL
8/4/2024-Evening Worship
SERMON 2: THE CHURCH – CALLED TO MENTOR, DISCIPLE & COUNSEL
Text: Job
Theme: Without help from the Lord we all make miserable counselors.
1 Thess 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
In each illustration I mentioned those giving counsel thought that they were helping the other
Job was a man in crisis and had gone through several critical trials. While he wasn’t directly seeking for counsel, there were those willing to counsel him. From this we can learn many lessons about people’s natural ability to counsel.
You won’t naturally give good counsel (advice)
Being concerned about someone is not enough to make you a good counselor. In fact, the close relationship often leads us to counsel improperly.
I. To relatives we often give unbiblical counsel (Job 2:9, 10)
Her advice was out of bitterness – the trials impacted her too
II. To friends… (Job 2:11-13; 3:1-3)
lTheir advice was out of judgment – they too were impacted by the aftermath of the trials
But they failed to consider the truth and the pain that he was going through
Look at Job’s response to their counsel (Job 16:1-6; 19:1-3; 21:1-3; 26:1-4)
III. To associates… (Job 32:1-5, 6b, 9, 10, 17; 36:1, 2)
Here the application would be coworkers, neighbors, etc
His advice was out of anger (Job 32:2, 3)
IV. To our own self… (Job 3:2-4, 11, 12, 26)
lHis advice was out of defense (defensive)
